Course description:
This senior seminar traces British drama from its bawdy rebirth in 1660 with the Restoration of the Monarchy, through the sentimental domesticity of the early eighteenth century, to the “laughing comedy” at the end of the century. Particular attention will be paid to comedy, as well as to various sub-genres such as tragicomic romance and corrective satire. We will also consider the history of London theatre, and theatrical culture, throughout the period.
